Holiday Barrel with Walla Faces

Every winter, Walla Walla wineries ring in the holiday season with one of the biggest events of the year: Holiday Barrel Tasting! On the first weekend of December, wineries across the valley open their doors for special events and samples of upcoming wines. Walla Faces is celebrating Holiday Barrel on Saturday, December 7th, and we want you to join us!

Come to the Walla Faces Winery on Saturday the 7th for an afternoon of good wine, good food, and good company. For your standard $5 tasting fee, you can meet some of the faces behind Faces, like co-winemakers Victor de la Luz and Rick Johnson! We’ll be pouring our normal full flight of six Walla Faces wines, plus we’ll have exclusive barrel samples of our upcoming 2012 Syrah, 2012 Tempranillo, and 2013 Rosé, all served up by Victor himself. Bottles of these wines won’t be sold for another few months, so it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity!

The 2013 Fall Teaser

It’s fall! The leaves have turned and are fluttering off the trees, and wineries around the Walla Walla Valley are preparing to open their doors and cellars for the big event this weekend: the 2013 Fall Release!

Here at Walla Faces, we’re busy preparing for our next release, in spring 2014. However, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate, so this weekend, we’re inviting you to our 2013 Fall Teaser!

We’ll be hosting a cozy reception at our downtown tasting room and art gallery this Saturday, November 2nd, from 3 to 6 pm. For your typical $5 tasting fee (free for our wine club members, of course), you can taste a sample of our work-in-progress 2012 Estate Syrah and our soon-to-be-bottled 2012 Tempranillo.  Tempranillo is a diverse food-pairing wine with great flavors of cherry and plum followed by a little vanilla and clove.  This wine pairs beautifully with lasagna, pizza and other tomato-based sauces.

Come chat with our assistant winemaker, Victor De La Luz.  You’ll enjoy his charismatic personality and stories of this year’s harvest.

We’ll also have some tasty tidbits of  luscious chocolates filled with the 2009 Estate Syrah, “Bill,” and samples of various cheeses paired with our current wines.

“Pairing on Main” Raises Money for Cancer Fund

September 21st was a busy day in the Walla Faces Tasting Room. (It was one of those days where your pace has to be consistently stay between a fastwalk and a sprint.) Not only did we have an endless stream of customers during our regular tasting hours, between 1 and 6, at 6pm the entering crowds became a veritable flood. It was time for “Pairing on Main”, a food and wine event organized by Providence Saint Mary Medical Center, a local full-service hospital.

2013 was the 9th annual Providence Saint Mary Gran Fondo. Gran Fondo, which means, “the Great Ride” started out as a bike riding event to help raise money for the Cancer Special Needs fund. This fund is essential for providing support to local cancer patients. Help ranges from medication to wigs and supportive undergarments for breast cancer patients. Since its advent, it has expanded, allowing participants to choose an event, including a walk, a motorcycle ride, a 5k fun run, a horse trail ride, and a cycling event. For the past five years, Providence Saint Mary has also organized a “Pairing On Main”, which couples local wineries and restaurants to create a series of culinary experiences as guests. This is Walla Faces’ second year participating in “Pairing on Main”.

I sat down with Mardi Hagerman, the Providence Saint Mary Resource Nurse, who was the brains behind Gran Fondo. “I was the original act in town for it!” she proclaims. “We needed to make some money for the special needs fund… the idea came up in the hallway with a nurse who was a cyclist, working with the Whitman cycling team.” The addition of “Pairing on Main” was the brainchild of Walla Walla Chef and Caterer Ceil Blain. “It just took off!” Mardi notes.

Participants receive a wineglass and a map. They migrate from tasting room to tasting room, each of which provides a sample of wine and a perfectly paired bite-sized hors d’œuvre, catered by one of Walla Walla’s finest restaurants. The first “Pairing on Main” sold 75 tickets. Now, the capacity has been bumped up to 150. “We’re not going to go above that because we are cognizant of the generosity of our vendors on main street, who are donating their food and wine… the restaurants are still serving guests plus doing our event!” Mardi confirms. “Our downtown proprietors are so generous.”

Mardi continues, “[This year] was very successful.” The 2013 Gran Fondo raised a record-breaking $29,000 for the Providence Saint Mary Cancer Fund. “The first year, we made $900,” Mardi notes. “Every year, people are a little more familiar with us and a little more sensitive to our cause. After all, there’s no one that isn’t affected by this diagnosis, whether it is a personal diagnosis or a family diagnosis.”

Mardi is not only in charge of organizing the event, she is the brawn behind the operation as well! “I’m the waitress,” she says. “I help out where I’m needed. I got my food handler’s permit so that I could do the grunt work.”

This year, Walla Faces was paired with Whitehouse Crawford. We served both our 2008 Syrah, a library wine with a perfect balance of white pepper and blackberry notes, and our 2010 Riesling, an off-dry wine that’s as complex as it is crisp. After tasting our wine, Whitehouse Crawford Head Chef Jamie Guerin prepared a Capocollo, jalapeño, goat cheese, and arugula salad-stuffed gougères. These cheesy French pastries are a wine-pairing classic; in France, they are traditionally consumed in wine cellars as a part of a wine tasting. In addition to donating our wine, 25% of Walla Faces bottle sales during the “Pairing on Main” were donated to the Providence Saint Mary Cancer Fund.

“Every year, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of this community,” Mardi says. “I have met so many wonderful people thanks to ‘Pairing on Main’, who have a strong heart for what we do.”

Friends of Children of Walla Walla, a local non-profit dedicated to providing adult mentorship for Walla Walla youth, is holding their sixth annual “Jazz and Wine Among Friends” fundraising event. Formed in 1999, the organization has helped hundred of Walla Walla children build confidence, increase academic performance, and avoid delinquency. Embracing the vibrant music and wine scene in the Walla Walla Valley, executive director Mark Brown puts together a yearly weekend-long event featuring some of the best musicians and wineries in the area. The event is always a blast! All proceeds go to Friends to help vulnerable children in Walla Walla.

Walla Faces participated last year, hosting music at our downtown tasting room location. This year, we are upping the ante! On Saturday, August 24th, from noon to 3pm, “Jazz and Wine Among Friends” will at the Walla Walla Incubators, the site of the Walla Faces Winery!

The band, Soul Essentials, may be a new name, but the artists will be familiar to anyone who loves the Walla Walla music scene. Gary Winston, Gary Hemenway, and Doug Scarborough will be putting their own spin on soul-influenced jazz. The incubators will be rocking with their powerful tunes!

The Walla Faces winery will be open during this time. Guests are encouraged to drop in and purchase a glass of wine or do a wine tasting before, during, or after the music. It’s also a great opportunity to see a location where some of the most innovative new wineries produce their wares.

Walla Faces At the Woodland Park Zoo

Every year, the Woodland Park Zoo hosts a wine tasting event to raise money for field conservation, science education, animal care, and facility maintenance. The Woodland Park Zoo, a Seattle zoo opened in 1899, is a 92 acre property that is home to over 1,000 wild animals. This year, the “Tasting Flight” event took place on July 19th. Of course, Walla Faces trekked the five hour drive from Walla Walla to Seattle to be a part of it! The “after hours, adults-only” fundraiser turned out to be a blast!

We brought our 2008 Fusion Red, the Rick & Debbie, and our 2008 Syrah, the Caroline, to taste. Each of the 35 participating wineries had a table set up in the the zoo’s gorgeous North Meadow. The lovely, sunny weather was perfect for appreciating the beauty of both the zoo and the wines. Because the wineries were arranged alphabetically, we were neighbors with the wonderful Walla Walla Village Winery.

When the doors opened at 6pm, we were overwhelmed by the turnout of this sold-out event. We were also thrilled to meet so many Seattleites who had stayed with us in the Walla Faces hotel or who had visited the Walla Faces tasting room on their wine tourism adventures.

In keeping with the Woodland Park Zoo’s conservationist ideals, participants brought their own glasses to the event. We had a great time looking at the fun glasses that everyone brought! We saw everything from expensive Riedel glassware to mason jars, from light-up wine glasses to coffee cups. Regardless of the glassware used, Walla Faces was one of the evening’s favorites. Participants exchanged tickets for pours of wine, and we quickly found our decanter filled to the brim with yellow paper.

The penguin exhibit was open to wine tasters, and the penguins were happy to oblige viewers by sunning themselves and taking a dip. Wine and penguin-watching might just be my favorite wine pairing yet.

Our wines were available for sale in wine store, another tent that laid out each winery’s wares. Happily, at the end of the night, we found that we brought the perfect amount of wine; we came home with one bottle of each wine.

Celebrate Walla Walla

The first Celebrate Walla Walla took place this past weekend. The 70 participating wineries came together to concretely demonstrate how special the Walla Walla Valley wine region is. On Saturday, Walla Faces hosted a winemaker dinner at our estate vineyard. The dinner featured the wines of four boutique wineries: CAVU Cellars, Corvus Cellars, Kontos Cellars, and, of course, Walla Faces! Each of these small wineries makes their wine at the Incubators at the airport. Our side-by-side wineries produce some of the most exclusive, innovative wines in Walla Walla.

The 77-degree Saturday was the perfect weather for sitting by the pool, admiring the flourishing Cabernet grapes, sipping wines, and dodging Angel, the winery dog, as she tried to acquire some snacks for herself.

The evening commenced with appetizers, including Copper River salmon flatbreads, topped with Dijon and local Monteillet fresh chevre. We also featured roasted red potatoes, which had been dug up that very morning from Chef Greg Schnorr‘s garden, and were complemented by a Parmesan souffle.  Mini BLTs made from jowl bacon also featured Chef Greg’s home-grown ingredients; Greg is known throughout Walla Walla for his hand-raised pork. Each of the four participating wineries cracked open a few crisp, chilled bottles to kick off the celebration! CAVU’s Barbera Rosé, Corvus’ Viognier, Kontos’ Gossamer White and Walla Faces’ Riesling all helped provide the ideal complement to the light appetizers and warm June day.

The second course included a Walla Walla Sweet Onion soup, with juicy braised oxtail at the bottom of the bowl. A toasted baguette covered in Gruyere was lovingly placed on top of each portion. This soup was paired with the Kontos Cellars 2009 Alatus Blend, a classic-tasting blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc that perfectly complemented the rich earthiness of the soup.

The third course was a duck confit ravioli, nested in an bolognese filled with more duck confit. A carrot and celery topping adorned the hand-made raviolis, which were created using duck eggs for the dough. Paired with the CAVU 2010 Barbera, a bold and spicy varietal that is an uncommon find in the Walla Walla Valley, the fatty duck flavors melted perfectly in my mouth.

The fourth course was a cherry stuffed pork chop straight from Chef Greg’s farm. “I named them after monsters this year,” Chef Greg quipped. “I believe that today we are eating ‘Kim Lard-Ashian’.” The bitter fresh arugula balanced the sweet, sage-stuffed cherries. The 2008 Walla Faces Fusion Red was the perfect pairing. This egg-white fined blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, and Syrah has dark cherry flavors that perfectly complemented the cherries in this dish.

The fifth course was lamb with a wild mushroom demi glace over a spoonful of whipped potatoes, which was paired with a 2009 Corvus Syrah/Petite Sirah blend. The allspice, plum and pepper flavors make this earthy, full-bodied wine great for lamb dishes.

Desserts included dark chocolate truffles, fresh Klicker strawberries over Hungarian shortbread, candied walnuts and a myriad of cheeses, served with the Walla Faces Ice Wine.

The dinner was an incredible success, with the beauty of the Walla Faces Estate Vineyard, the mouth-watering flavor of the food, and the locally-made perfection of the wines melding together to showcase the best of what Walla Walla has to offer. We were happy to celebrate this region with both Walla Faces regular customers and brand new faces. Thank you to everyone who helped this event happen or who attended. March is Washington Wine Month, a month dedicated to the best of this region’s vineyards, wineries and drinks. But why celebrate Washington Wine Month?

1.  Wine is an important part of Washingtonian agriculture

Wine is the fastest growing agricultural sector of the state, with a 400% increase in the past two decades.

The state has 13 federally defined American Viticultural Areas, and 12 of those 13 are in Eastern Washington. 99% of Washington’s wine grapes are grown east of the Cascades. Thus, Eastern Washington is one of the largest producers of wine in the country.

Cumulatively, the state has over 350 wine grape growers. This wine growth adds up to 43,000 acres. As a result, Washington vineyards produce more wine grapes than any other state in the nation save for California.

2.  Wine is important to Washingtonian history

Wine grapes have been growing in Washington State since 1825. From there, they followed the moving settlers. German and Italian immigrants pioneered early winemaking in the 1860s and 1870s. By 1910, wine grapes were common throughout the entire state.

3.  Washington wines are diverse

Washington wines have huge diversity in both varietals and style. Unlike some areas, which may specialize in only a few varietals, our state offers high quality wine of many types. Whether you love Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling or Syrah and Chardonnay, Washington wineries have many amazing choices of your favorites.

Almost equal amounts of space are dedicated to red and white varietals, offering the maximum amount of choice for consumers.

Washington wineries produce virtually every style of wine. Rosés, sparkling wine, fortified wine and ice wines are all produced here. Furthermore, innovative winemakers in Washington state are eager to try out new techniques or re-introduce more classical methods with a modern twist.

Of the 12 million cases of wine that Washington wineries product annually, there is almost certainly something for everyone.

4.  Wine is an essential part of the Washington economy

Washington State has over 750 wineries, a number that has more than doubled since 2005.

The Washington wine industry employs 30,000 full time workers inside the state. Wine supports everyone from farmers to machinery suppliers to laboratories to retailers. It also serves as a catalyst for other forms of commerce, such as tourism. In Walla Walla, our amazing restaurant scene is supported by tourists who visit to find the perfect Cabernet or Syrah.

According to a 2011 report by the Washington State Wine Commission, our state’s wine has a $14.9 billion annual impact on the US economy.

5.  Washington wines are delicious

Anyone who is familiar with Washington wines knows that there are some damn good wines here. Paul Gregutt, wine writer for both the Seattle Times and the Wine Enthusiast, observes that Washington wines are characterized by their purity, their ripe tannins and their bright acidity.

One of our most beloved holiday traditions has just arrived: Holiday Barrel Tasting Weekend! This festive event offers an exclusive opportunity to taste future vintages before they make their way into the bottle. We have carefully selected a few of our favorite barrels to help provide a unique and exciting sample of Walla Faces wines. This is the perfect opportunity for those of you who can’t wait for this wine to make it into the barrel!

This is also your first chance to check out our new winery at the airport. This tiny location forms the backbone of Walla Faces’ wine production operation. We are actively working on new projects right now. Drop by, get a sample, and meet our assistant winemaker, Victor De La Luz, who is bustling about the winery, hard at work.

Downtown, at the Tasting Room, we have opened up a bottle of our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the Matthew. It is named for our head winemaker, Matt Loso. This fruit-forward Cab was made from the free run of 100% Walla Faces Estate Cabernet grapes and is normally not available to the general public.

Walla Faces at 20Something: The New Vintage

 
On Saturday, November 17th, Walla Faces had the privilege of pouring for a great crowd at 20something: the New Vintage. This walk-and-pour event at Fremont Studios in Seattle allowed us the opportunity to mingle with younger Washington wine lovers as they checked out new wineries, munched on amazing culinary treats, and sipped some fabulous vino!

Will and I are Tasting Room Attendants at the Walla Faces Tasting Room on 216 East Main Street in Walla Walla. We drove all the way up from Walla Walla to Seattle for this event! Armed with our color-coded winery representative passes, we arrived early to set up and chill our Riesling.

Both the Riesling and the Fusion were standouts for the evening! Many people remarked that we were their favorite winery in attendance. I even got the opportunity to meet the head of the Washington Wine Commission! He told me that he loves the 2008 Fusion and enjoys staying the Walla Faces Inns when he is in Walla Walla. That is high praise!

Thanks to everyone who came to this fun evening and supported us! We hope to see your faces at our next pouring event.

A Message From Rick and Debbie Johnson

More than two years ago, Walla Faces began featuring live music as part of its “Arts” program.  We initially started with music one night a week and gradually built it to five nights a week this summer.  It has been a fun project and very rewarding to see all of the local talent play in our tasting room.   Many of our local performers have impressively grown and expanded their musical skills over the last couple of years.  I like to think we played a small part in that development by offering them our venue in which to play.

In addition to our many talented local performers, we have had many nationally known performers play in our tasting room.  It is hard to believe we had the likes of The Posies, Randy Hansen, Susan Gibson and many other nationally known performers play right here in Walla Walla.  And of course, the capstone and high point of the last two years was Walla Faces promoting and sponsoring Peter Frampton playing in Walla Walla at Cordiner Hall.  For me that will definitely be a life memory.

Along with the music program, Walla Faces has also grown.  Since we first opened our doors a little over two years ago, we have been pleasantly surprised about the acceptance of the Walla Faces wine brand.   Our wine sales have been growing.  Continued growth is going to require changes on our part to increase our production to meet demand.  Up until now, we have been sharing our wine making with another local winery.  We now are moving into our own winery out by the airport.  This move will help us to increase our production and have better control of our product.  It is also going to require more time on our part to monitor the wine and expanded production.

Starting November 1, we are going to have to suspend our music program for the near several months because of these new time constraints.    We hope to bring back music in one form or another in the future.  We are exploring many options to include music as part of our tasting room and winery experience.
